Lager Wick, Forced Labour Camp

Construction of German fortifications and infrastructure required huge amounts of labour and  material. Initially, the first fortifications were constructed by military personnel and locally employed labour. This was not enough and Organisation Todt soon arrived in the Island to oversee the construction. Labour was at first supplemented by large numbers of forced labourers, conscripted from German occupied countries or prisoners of war. They were different from “slave” labourers, who were mainly Russian prisoners regarded as sub-humans by the Nazis, and who were brought to the Island later.

Lager Wick was a forced labour camp which has recently been subject to some archaeological investigation. A few poignant remains still exist of this camp.
